Discovering the Historical Archive and Engineering Design: “At business school” with Fondazione MAIRE
NEWSOn February 17, 2025, our training day for class 4A of the Malpighi High School in Bologna took place, hosted at the MAIRE offices in Milan. The training course is part of the training carousel of the project “A scuola d’impresa.L’Italia nei nostri musei e archivi d’impresa” [“At business school. Italy in our museums and business archives"] which was born from the collaboration between Museimpresa, LIUC Carlo Cattaneo University with its Heritage Hub, and the Industrial Cinema and Business Communication Archive.
A journey to discover the history and heritage of the Group, through the discovery of ancient work tools, plant models, drawings, and microfilms that make up part of the vast MAIRE Historical Archive. Students were able to choose and touch some objects, explore them, and ask questions to understand their functionality. They were given the opportunity to film and photograph this journey to create material and begin their “project work”.
To facilitate the narrative of the project work, the story of the company, we presented the history of the historical archive within the history of engineering design, which is also part of the company's heritage, through the expert voices of our colleagues, the engineers MAIRE and Tecnimont. “Yesterday, today, tomorrow: the evolution of engineering design, from technical drawings to artificial intelligence” was the title of the training proposal for the second part of the day.
The evolution of plant design, from the old-fashioned drawing up of blueprints in the design room to today's use of artificial intelligence, via 3D design. The students also experienced this evolution firsthand: some of them were able to “visit” a MAIRE construction site on the other side of the world through virtual reality—with a 3D visor and company tools! To complete the training program, there was a lesson on “how to make a video”: from the more theoretical aspects of planning and organizing the work to practical advice on filming.
In addition to the materials made available and used during the day, the students will be able to benefit from a selection of archival materials, images of the plants, and the presentation shown; they will also have access to our Digital Vault.
All the ingredients for a video product (their “project work”), which we can’t wait to see and which the students will have to submit by April 2025.
